When New is Necessary

The Right Container for Critical Applications

We are strong advocates for used and reconditioned IBC tanks -- they save money and reduce waste. But we also understand that certain applications have non-negotiable requirements: pharmaceutical production, hazmat transport, food-grade first-fill compliance, or customers who contractually require virgin containers. For these scenarios, a new IBC tank is the right choice, and we are here to supply it.

Even when you buy new, you are still making a sustainable choice by partnering with IBC Recycle Services. We will take your tanks back at end of life for reconditioning or recycling, ensuring they never end up in a landfill. It is a closed-loop commitment from day one.

Industry Applications

Where New Tanks Are Essential

Certain industries and applications require brand-new IBC tanks for regulatory compliance, product purity, or customer contractual requirements.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Virgin containers are required for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) transport, excipient storage, and purified water systems. 316L stainless steel tanks with electropolished interiors meet the strictest pharma-grade cleanliness standards.

Hazardous Materials Transport

DOT regulations require UN-certified containers for the highway transport of hazardous substances. Only new, factory-certified IBC tanks carry valid UN 31HA1 or UN 31A markings that satisfy carrier and regulatory requirements.

Food & Beverage First-Fill

Some food safety programs (SQF, BRC, FSSC 22000) require virgin containers for first-fill operations. New HDPE tanks with FDA 21 CFR 177-compliant resin meet these requirements out of the box.

Semiconductor & Electronics

Ultra-pure chemical handling for semiconductor fabrication demands contamination-free containers. Stainless steel IBCs with electropolished interiors and tri-clamp fittings prevent particulate and ionic contamination.

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Premium cosmetic brands often mandate new containers for raw material receipt to protect formulation integrity. New HDPE tanks with tamper-evident seals provide the chain-of-custody assurance these brands require.

International Chemical Shipping

Cross-border transport of regulated chemicals requires current UN certification and full documentation. New UN-rated IBCs with serialized markings simplify customs clearance and comply with IMDG, ADR, and RID regulations.

Specialty Coatings & Adhesives

High-performance coatings and adhesives are sensitive to contamination from prior contents. New tanks with anti-static HDPE bottles prevent static discharge in flammable environments while ensuring zero residue contact.

Biofuel & Renewable Energy

Biodiesel, ethanol, and other biofuels require chemically compatible containers with proper certifications. New HDPE and stainless steel tanks handle the unique demands of biofuel chemistry and transport regulations.

Contract Packaging & Co-Packing

Co-packers serving multiple clients need new containers to prevent cross-contamination between product lines. The cost of a new tank is far less than the risk of a contamination recall affecting a client relationship.

Care & Maintenance

Maximize Your Tank Investment

New IBC tanks are built for long service lives, but proper care is essential to realize their full potential.

HDPE Tanks: UV Protection

HDPE degrades under sustained ultraviolet radiation, becoming brittle and prone to cracking over time. For outdoor installations, choose a black UV-stabilized bottle or use a UV-resistant cover. Indoor storage is always preferred. Even translucent bottles benefit from a cover to prevent algae growth in water applications.

Stainless Steel: Passivation

After initial installation and after any weld repairs, passivate the stainless steel surface with a citric acid or nitric acid solution to restore the protective chromium oxide layer. This prevents pitting corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments. Electropolished surfaces require less frequent passivation but should still be treated after any mechanical contact.

Valve Maintenance

Exercise the bottom valve through full open-close cycles monthly, even when the tank is idle. This prevents the ball or butterfly disc from seizing due to sediment or chemical crystallization. Inspect the valve gasket quarterly and replace at the first sign of leaking. Keep a spare valve assembly in stock to minimize downtime.

Cleaning Between Product Changes

When switching the product stored in an HDPE tank, flush with warm water and a compatible cleaning agent. For stainless steel tanks, use CIP (clean-in-place) protocols with caustic wash, acid rinse, and final water rinse. Document every cleaning cycle for traceability and compliance.

Stacking and Storage

New IBC tanks are rated for stacking 2 high when full and up to 4 high when empty. Always use a level, stable surface. Never stack tanks with different pallet types (e.g., steel on HDPE) as this can create instability. During long-term storage, leave fill caps slightly loose to allow pressure equalization and prevent bottle deformation.

Record Keeping for Compliance

Maintain a log of contents, fill dates, cleaning dates, and any maintenance performed. This is essential for food safety audits, hazmat compliance, and warranty claims. Your new tank documentation includes serial numbers and certification details -- use these as the foundation of your records.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose a new IBC tank over used or reconditioned?

Choose new when your application has non-negotiable requirements: UN/DOT certification for hazmat transport, first-fill food-grade compliance for SQF/BRC audits, pharmaceutical-grade purity, or contractual obligations from your customer requiring virgin containers. Also choose new when you need stainless steel construction, custom configurations, or specific certifications that cannot be obtained through reconditioning.

What is the difference between 304 and 316L stainless steel?

304 stainless steel is the most common grade, offering excellent corrosion resistance for most chemicals and food-contact applications. 316L adds molybdenum for superior resistance to chloride corrosion and pitting, making it essential for marine environments, pharmaceutical use, and highly corrosive chemicals like hydrochloric acid. 316L is also preferred when welding is required, as the low-carbon variant resists sensitization and intergranular corrosion at weld zones.

How do I know which UN certification I need?

UN 31HA1 covers composite IBCs -- an HDPE bottle inside a steel cage. This is the most common rating for hazardous liquid transport in plastic IBCs. UN 31A covers rigid metal IBCs made entirely of stainless steel. The specific packing group (I, II, or III) depends on the hazard level of your substance. Our team can review your Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and recommend the correct rating.

Can you add custom labels or branding to new tanks?

Yes. We offer factory-applied custom labeling including company logos, product identification, GHS hazard labels, barcodes, QR codes, and serialized asset tags. Labeling can be printed, adhesive, or embossed depending on your requirements. Minimum order quantities apply for custom labeling -- typically 25 units.

What is the lead time for custom configurations?

Custom configurations -- including non-standard capacities, special fittings, custom colors, or unique material specifications -- are manufactured to order. Typical lead times are 4 to 8 weeks from order confirmation. Standard configurations are stocked and typically ship within 5 to 10 business days.

Do you offer a buyback program for new tanks at end of life?

Yes. Every new tank purchased from IBC Recycle Services is eligible for our end-of-life buyback program. When your tank reaches the end of its useful life, we will purchase it back (or arrange free pickup) for reconditioning or recycling. This closes the loop, keeps material out of landfills, and may offset your next purchase cost.

What warranty coverage comes with new tanks?

New HDPE and UN-rated tanks carry the original manufacturer warranty, typically 12 to 24 months covering defects in materials and workmanship. New stainless steel tanks carry a manufacturer warranty of 24 to 60 months depending on the grade and manufacturer. All warranties cover leaks, structural defects, and premature material failure under normal use conditions.

Can I get a sample before placing a large order?

Absolutely. We encourage customers to order a single sample unit before committing to a large quantity. The sample ships at standard pricing with full specifications and documentation. This allows your team to verify fit, function, and compatibility before scaling up.
