Save Money. Save the Planet.
Choosing a used IBC tote over a brand-new one saves an average of 60% on your purchase price while keeping a perfectly functional container out of the waste stream. Every reused tote prevents roughly 50 pounds of HDPE plastic and 30 pounds of steel from being manufactured from scratch, eliminating the associated carbon emissions, water usage, and raw-material extraction.
Our used totes go through a rigorous multi-point inspection before they reach your facility. We check the inner bottle for cracks, discoloration, and residue; verify the galvanized steel cage for structural integrity; and confirm the pallet base is solid and free of damage. The result is a container that performs like new at a fraction of the cost and environmental impact.

The manufacturing of a single new IBC tote generates approximately 120 pounds of CO2 and consumes nearly 200 gallons of water. By choosing used, you eliminate that footprint entirely. Multiply that across a fleet of 50 or 100 containers, and the environmental savings become genuinely significant. When you partner with IBC Recycle Services, you receive documentation of your sustainability impact that you can share with stakeholders, customers, and ESG reports.

Maximize the Life of Your Used Totes
Proper care can extend the service life of a used IBC tote by several additional years. Follow these expert tips to get the most from your investment.
Store Out of Direct Sunlight
UV radiation is the number-one enemy of HDPE plastic. Prolonged sun exposure causes the bottle to become brittle, discolored, and eventually crack. Store totes indoors, under a roof, or use a UV-resistant cover. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, orient the tote so the valve faces away from the prevailing sun direction and invest in a fitted UV cover.
Keep the Valve Closed When Not in Use
Even when the tote is empty, keep the bottom valve in the closed position. An open valve invites insects, debris, and moisture into the bottle, which can lead to contamination or mold growth. If the tote will be stored long-term, consider capping the valve outlet with a dust cap as well.
Rinse Between Different Contents
If you switch the type of liquid stored in your tote, always rinse the bottle thoroughly between uses. Residual chemicals or food products can react with new contents, causing off-flavors, contamination, or chemical incompatibility. Use warm water and a mild detergent suitable for HDPE surfaces.
Inspect the Cage Quarterly
Check the galvanized steel cage for signs of rust, bent tubes, or loose welds every three months. Minor surface rust can be treated with a zinc-rich cold-galvanizing spray. Bent or damaged cage members compromise stacking safety and should be repaired or the tote retired from stacking use.
Replace Gaskets Proactively
Valve and cap gaskets are wear items that degrade over time -- especially when exposed to chemicals, heat, or UV light. Replace gaskets annually or at the first sign of weeping or dripping. A $3 gasket replacement prevents product loss and environmental spills that cost far more.
Do Not Overfill
Leave at least 2 inches of headspace below the fill cap to allow for thermal expansion. Liquids expand when heated, and an overfilled tote can rupture the cap seal, distort the bottle, or in extreme cases crack the HDPE walls. This is especially critical for totes stored outdoors where temperature swings are significant.
Clean the Pallet Base
Dirt, mud, and spilled product can accumulate on the pallet base and cause corrosion on steel pallets or make HDPE pallets slippery on forklift tines. Rinse the pallet base periodically and ensure the forklift entry channels are clear of debris before lifting.
Properly Label Contents
Always label your totes with the current contents, date of fill, and any relevant safety information. This prevents accidental cross-contamination and ensures compliance with workplace safety regulations. Remove or cover old labels to avoid confusion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions we receive about used IBC totes.
Can I use a used IBC tote for drinking water?
Yes, but only if you purchase a food-grade tote that previously held potable or food-safe liquids. Our food-grade used totes are triple-washed and inspected for residue, odor, and contamination. We provide a certificate of cleanliness confirming the prior contents and cleaning process. For long-term potable water storage, we also recommend using a food-safe IBC liner as an additional barrier and replacing the water every 6-12 months.
What is the difference between food-grade and non-food-grade used totes?
The classification is based entirely on what the tote previously contained. A food-grade used tote held food-safe substances such as juice, syrup, cooking oil, or potable water. A non-food-grade tote held non-hazardous industrial liquids like soaps, detergents, lubricants, or glycols. The physical construction of the tote is identical -- the difference is in the prior-use history. Non-food-grade totes should never be used for food or potable water storage, even after cleaning.
How long will a used IBC tote last?
With proper care, a used IBC tote can provide 3 to 7 additional years of service depending on the application, storage conditions, and contents. UV exposure is the primary factor that shortens lifespan. Totes stored indoors or under cover last significantly longer. The steel cage and pallet are virtually indestructible under normal use -- it is the HDPE bottle that will eventually need replacement. When the bottle reaches end of life, we can rebottle the unit for another 5+ years of service.
Do used totes smell?
Food-grade totes that previously held neutral substances like water or cooking oil typically have no detectable odor. Totes that previously held flavored products like juice or syrup may retain a faint residual scent even after cleaning. Non-food-grade totes may carry a mild chemical odor depending on prior contents. We disclose prior contents on every tote so you know what to expect. If odor sensitivity is a concern, we recommend food-grade A-grade totes or a rebottled reconditioned unit.
Can I stack used IBC totes?
Yes. IBC totes are designed to be stacked up to two high when full and up to four high when empty, provided the cage and pallet are in sound condition. Our A-grade and B-grade used totes are fully stack-rated. C-grade totes with cosmetic cage damage should be evaluated individually for stacking suitability. Always stack on a level surface and ensure the upper tote pallet is properly seated on the lower tote cage.
What chemicals are compatible with HDPE IBC bottles?
HDPE is compatible with a wide range of chemicals including most acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric), bases (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide), alcohols, and aqueous solutions. It is NOT compatible with strong oxidizers (concentrated nitric acid), aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene), or chlorinated solvents (methylene chloride, trichloroethylene). Always verify chemical compatibility with the specific concentration and temperature of your application. We can provide a detailed compatibility chart upon request.
Do you offer a warranty on used totes?
Yes. All used IBC totes come with a 30-day leak-free guarantee. If a tote leaks under normal use within 30 days of delivery, we will replace it at no charge. This warranty covers manufacturing defects and hidden damage that was not detectable during our inspection process. It does not cover damage caused by chemical incompatibility, overfilling, freezing, external impact, or misuse.
Can you deliver to my location?
We ship nationwide across the continental United States via flatbed, dry van, and LTL freight carriers. We can deliver to commercial facilities with loading docks, construction sites, farms, and residential addresses (with liftgate service). Alaska, Hawaii, and international shipments are available by special arrangement. Customer pickup at our facility is also available at no charge.
