Our Process

Six Steps to Like-New Quality

Every reconditioned IBC tank passes through our meticulous six-step process, ensuring consistency, safety, and performance on every unit.

01

Intake & Assessment

Every incoming IBC tank is catalogued, photographed, and assessed for reconditioning viability. We check the cage geometry, weld integrity, bottle condition, valve operation, and pallet base. Tanks that do not meet our minimum threshold are diverted to our recycling stream instead.

02

Disassembly

The IBC is fully disassembled into its three core components: inner bottle, steel cage, and pallet base. This allows each element to be inspected and treated independently for the best possible result.

03

Cleaning & Treatment

Inner bottles undergo a multi-stage wash using approved cleaning agents, hot-water rinse, and air-dry cycle. Steel cages are pressure-washed, de-rusted, and treated with anti-corrosion coating. Pallets are cleaned and structurally tested.

04

Replacement & Repair

Worn components are replaced. For rebottled units, a brand-new HDPE bottle is installed. For fully reconditioned units, cages receive new cross-braces, welds, or galvanizing as required. New valves, gaskets, and caps are fitted on every unit.

05

Reassembly & QC

The IBC is reassembled and put through a final quality-control checklist: leak test, valve operation test, cage stress test, and cosmetic inspection. Each unit is assigned a unique reconditioning ID for traceability.

06

Certification & Shipping

Approved units receive a reconditioning certificate with date, grade, and prior-use classification. They are palletized, stretch-wrapped, and staged for delivery. Nationwide shipping is available via flatbed or LTL freight.

Reconditioning is Recycling Done Right

A single reconditioning cycle extends the useful life of an IBC tank by 3 to 5 years while using only 15% of the energy required to manufacture a new unit. Over its lifetime, a reconditioned IBC can be cycled two to three times before the materials are retired to our recycling stream -- meaning one original tank can deliver up to 15 years of service. That is a powerful return on investment for your business and the environment.

Industry Applications

Who Chooses Reconditioned?

Reconditioned IBC tanks are the preferred choice for industries that need quality above used-as-is but want savings over brand-new.

Food & Beverage Production

Rebottled tanks with new food-grade HDPE bottles are ideal for storing syrups, flavorings, oils, and vinegars. The new bottle eliminates cross-contamination risk while the restored cage delivers structural integrity at 40% less than new.

Chemical Manufacturing

Fully reconditioned tanks with new valves and gaskets handle detergents, solvents, lubricants, and process chemicals. The re-galvanized cage provides excellent corrosion resistance for aggressive chemical environments.

Pharmaceutical & Cosmetics

Rebottled units provide a virgin-grade contact surface for secondary ingredient storage, cleaning solutions, and utility water. The cost savings allow facilities to maintain larger buffer inventories without exceeding budgets.

Water Treatment & Utilities

Reconditioned tanks store treatment chemicals, water softener brine, and process water. The warranty coverage and traceability documentation satisfy utility compliance requirements that used-as-is totes may not meet.

Agriculture & Horticulture

Large farming operations use reconditioned tanks for liquid fertilizer blending, pesticide premix, and irrigation reserves. The extended lifespan justifies the modest premium over used totes for season-after-season reliability.

Automotive & Manufacturing

Reconditioned tanks handle coolants, cutting fluids, parts-washing solutions, and paint mixing. The fully rebuilt option with sandblasted and re-coated cages is popular in environments where cosmetic appearance matters.

Care & Maintenance

Protect Your Investment

Your reconditioned tank has been rebuilt to deliver years of reliable service. These maintenance best practices will help you get the most from it.

Conduct a Pre-Use Inspection

Before first fill, visually inspect the bottle interior for any shipping debris, verify the valve operates smoothly in both directions, and confirm the fill cap gasket is seated properly. Run a quick water test if the tank will hold a high-value or sensitive product.

Monitor Cage Coatings

Rebottled tanks retain the original cage, which may have minor surface wear. Check quarterly for rust spots, especially at weld joints and cage-to-pallet connections. Touch up with zinc-rich spray paint to prevent corrosion spread. Fully reconditioned cages with fresh galvanizing should remain rust-free for 5+ years under normal conditions.

Replace Gaskets on Schedule

Even new gaskets degrade over time from chemical exposure, temperature cycling, and UV light. Replace valve and cap gaskets every 12 -- 18 months for chemical service, or every 24 months for water and food-grade service. Keep spare gaskets in stock to prevent downtime.

Avoid Prolonged UV Exposure

Even a new HDPE bottle will degrade under sustained UV radiation. Store reconditioned tanks indoors or under cover whenever possible. For outdoor installations, use a UV-resistant cover or request a black UV-stabilized bottle at time of reconditioning.

Maintain Stacking Discipline

Reconditioned tanks are rated for stacking up to 2 high when full. Always ensure the upper tank pallet is squarely seated on the lower tank cage. Never stack tanks with visible cage damage, bent uprights, or missing cross-members. Unstable stacks are a serious workplace hazard.

Document Contents and Cleaning

Maintain a log of what each tank has held and when it was last cleaned. This supports compliance, prevents cross-contamination, and preserves your warranty. Our reconditioning certificate provides a starting baseline -- continue the record from there.

Customer Reviews

Trusted by Professionals Nationwide

We switched from buying new tanks to rebottled units from IBC Recycle Services two years ago. The quality is indistinguishable from new -- clean, leak-tested, new bottle, new valve. We have saved over $15,000 annually and our quality team has zero complaints.

Robert C.

Plant Manager, Southeastern Food Ingredients

The fully reconditioned tanks are outstanding. Sandblasted cages, fresh galvanizing, new bottles -- they look and perform like factory-fresh units. Our customers cannot tell the difference, and the 12-month warranty gives us confidence to stand behind every shipment.

Angela M.

Procurement Lead, Midwest Chemical Distributors

We buy 50 rebottled tanks every spring for liquid fertilizer blending. The reconditioning quality is consistent batch after batch, the pricing is fair, and delivery is always on time. The extended warranty on our bulk order was a nice bonus. Highly recommend.

Tom S.

Facility Director, Valley Agricultural Co-op

We needed food-grade containers for our bulk soap base but could not justify new tank pricing for our startup. The rebottled IBCs were the perfect solution -- brand new inside where it counts, and about $125 less per unit than buying new. Great product.

Jessica H.

Supply Chain Manager, Artisan Soap Company

Compliance documentation was our biggest concern. IBC Recycle Services provides full reconditioning certificates with batch records, prior-use disclosure, and QC sign-off on every unit. It made our regulatory audit straightforward. The tanks themselves have been flawless.

Carlos R.

Operations VP, Pacific Water Treatment

We chose reconditioned tanks specifically for the environmental benefit. Each reconditioning cycle uses 85% less energy than manufacturing new. That data point alone was worth including in our annual sustainability report. The tanks perform beautifully for our CIP water storage.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between rebottled and fully reconditioned?

Rebottled means the original inner HDPE bottle is removed and replaced with a brand-new one. The steel cage is cleaned and inspected but retains its original finish. Fully reconditioned goes further: the cage is sandblasted and re-galvanized or powder-coated, the pallet is replaced if worn, and every component is brought to near-OEM condition. Choose rebottled when you need a clean interior at lower cost; choose fully reconditioned when you need the entire tank to look and perform like new.

Are reconditioned tanks food-grade safe?

Yes, rebottled tanks with a new FDA-compliant HDPE bottle are food-grade safe for storing food-contact liquids. The new bottle has never held any substance, so there is zero risk of contamination from prior contents. We provide documentation confirming the bottle material meets FDA 21 CFR 177 requirements for food contact.

Can reconditioned tanks be UN/DOT certified for hazmat?

Reconditioned tanks are generally not eligible for new UN/DOT certification because the certification applies to the original manufacturing process. If your application requires UN/DOT-rated containers for hazardous materials transport, we recommend our new IBC tanks that come with factory certification. Reconditioned tanks can still be used for hazmat storage (not transport) depending on local regulations.

How many times can an IBC be reconditioned?

A typical IBC cage and pallet can go through 2 to 3 reconditioning cycles over a total service life of 12 to 15 years. The HDPE bottle is replaced each cycle, so the interior is always fresh. The limiting factor is usually the steel cage -- once it shows significant structural fatigue, cracking at weld points, or thinning from corrosion, it is retired to our recycling stream.

Do you recondition tanks I already own?

Yes, we offer contract reconditioning services for companies that want to recondition their own fleet. Ship us your used tanks (or we can arrange pickup), and we will rebottle or fully recondition them and return them to you. This is a popular option for companies that reuse the same tanks repeatedly and want to keep their fleet in top condition.

What warranty do I get?

Rebottled tanks carry a 6-month warranty covering leaks, valve failure, and structural defects. Fully reconditioned tanks carry a 12-month comprehensive warranty covering all components. Extended warranties up to 24 months are available for orders of 25+ units. The warranty covers manufacturing and reconditioning defects -- not damage from misuse, chemical incompatibility, or external impact.

What happens to the old bottles you remove?

Every HDPE bottle we remove during reconditioning is shredded and sent to our plastics recycling partner where it is processed into post-consumer recycled HDPE pellets. These pellets are used to manufacture non-food-contact products like drainage pipe, landscape edging, and plastic lumber. Nothing goes to landfill.
