Step by Step

How a Shipment Moves

From the moment you request a quote to the final delivery confirmation, here is exactly what happens behind the scenes when we move your IBC totes.

1

Quote Request & Route Planning

You provide the pickup address, delivery address, number of totes, and any special requirements (food-grade, hazmat residue, etc.). Our logistics team inputs this information into our route optimization software, which calculates the most efficient route, selects the appropriate vehicle type, and generates a quote within hours. For standard shipments, you will receive a quote same-day. Complex multi-stop or multi-load shipments may take 24 hours.

2

Scheduling & Confirmation

Once you accept the quote, we lock in a pickup date and time window. You will receive an email confirmation with the driver name, truck number, estimated arrival time, and a direct contact number. For recurring shipments, we establish a standing schedule that requires no repeated booking. Changes to scheduled pickups can be made up to 24 hours in advance at no penalty.

3

Loading & Securing

Our drivers arrive with all necessary equipment: straps, edge protectors, ramps, and dollies. IBC totes are loaded using forklifts (yours or ours) and secured with ratchet straps and corner protectors to prevent shifting and damage in transit. For flatbed loads, totes are double-stacked and shrink-wrapped. For enclosed trucks, each tote is individually strapped. The driver conducts a final load inspection before departure.

4

In-Transit Tracking

Every shipment is tracked via GPS from pickup to delivery. You receive a tracking link immediately after departure. Our dispatch team monitors all active shipments in real time and proactively communicates any delays or schedule changes. For high-value or time-sensitive shipments, we provide hourly location updates and ETA refinements.

5

Delivery & Unloading

At the destination, our driver coordinates with the receiving team to unload totes safely and efficiently. We deliver to loading docks, ground level, or any accessible area. Liftgate service is available for locations without dock facilities. The driver obtains a signed delivery receipt confirming the count and condition of all containers delivered.

6

Post-Delivery Documentation

After delivery, you receive a digital copy of the signed delivery receipt, a trip summary with mileage and carbon offset documentation, and an invoice (or confirmation of prepayment). For businesses with ongoing transportation accounts, invoices are consolidated weekly or monthly as preferred. All documentation is stored digitally and accessible through your account portal.

Industry Solutions

Transportation by Industry

Different industries have different transportation needs. Here is how we tailor our logistics services for the sectors we serve most.

Food & Beverage

Food-grade IBC totes require clean, enclosed transportation to prevent contamination during transit. We use dedicated enclosed trucks for food-grade shipments and never co-load food containers with industrial or chemical totes.

Enclosed truck transport for contamination prevention
Temperature-controlled options for heat-sensitive products
FDA-compliant handling procedures
Dedicated food-grade fleet vehicles

Chemical & Hazmat

Containers with chemical residues require DOT-compliant transportation with proper placarding, driver certification, and spill containment equipment. Our hazmat-certified drivers handle these shipments with the appropriate training and documentation.

DOT hazmat-certified drivers
Proper placarding and shipping documentation
On-board spill containment equipment
Emergency response planning for every load

Agriculture

Agricultural IBC tote transport often involves rural locations with unpaved roads, limited access, and seasonal timing constraints. Our fleet includes vehicles capable of navigating farm roads and field conditions that standard carriers cannot handle.

Rural and farm-road accessible vehicles
Seasonal scheduling aligned with planting and harvest
Multi-stop routes for co-op and dealer networks
Open-yard pickup without loading dock requirements

Manufacturing & Industrial

Manufacturing plants need reliable, scheduled transportation that integrates with their production cycles. We provide just-in-time delivery of clean containers and scheduled pickup of empties synchronized with your production schedule.

Just-in-time delivery for production lines
Synchronized empty container return pickups

Government and municipal procurement compliance
Secure facility access procedures
Documentation for public utility reporting requirements
Freight Pricing

What Affects Shipping Costs

IBC tote transportation costs depend on several variables. Understanding these factors helps you budget accurately and choose the most cost-effective option.

Shipping Method: FTL vs. LTL

Full truckload (FTL) shipments of 48-56 totes offer the lowest per-unit cost because the entire truck is dedicated to your load with no intermediate stops. Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments for smaller quantities are priced per unit and include consolidation with other shipments. The break-even point is typically around 24-28 units where FTL becomes more economical than LTL.

FTL: $2-$4/mile (48-56 units) | LTL: $50-$150/unit depending on distance

Distance & Route

Transportation costs scale with distance, but not linearly. Short hauls under 200 miles have a higher per-mile cost due to the fixed costs of loading, unloading, and driver time. Long-haul routes over 500 miles benefit from highway efficiency and are priced more favorably per mile. Backhaul opportunities (where we already have a truck returning empty) can reduce rates by 20-40%.

Under 200 miles: $3-$5/mile | 200-500 miles: $2.50-$3.50/mile | 500+ miles: $2-$3/mile

Quantity & Load Configuration

The number of totes directly affects per-unit shipping cost. A single tote on an LTL shipment costs more per unit than 20 totes on the same LTL shipment. Double-stacking (standard for flatbed loads) maximizes truck capacity and lowers per-unit costs. Orders of 10+ units see meaningful per-unit savings over smaller quantities.

1-4 units: Highest per-unit cost | 10-24 units: Moderate | 48-56 units (FTL): Lowest

Pickup & Delivery Requirements

Standard dock-to-dock delivery is the most economical. Liftgate service adds $75-$150 per stop for locations without loading docks. Inside delivery (hand-carrying totes to a specific location) adds additional labor charges. Multiple stop deliveries are priced per stop with a small surcharge for each additional location.

Dock-to-dock: Standard | Liftgate: +$75-$150 | Multi-stop: +$50-$100/stop

Speed & Service Level

Standard transit times range from 1-5 days depending on distance. Expedited service (guaranteed 48-hour delivery) carries a 25-50% premium over standard rates. Same-day service is available for emergency shipments within our core service area at approximately double the standard rate.

Standard: Base rate | Expedited (48hr): +25-50% | Same-day: +100%

Special Handling Requirements

Food-grade containers requiring enclosed, clean transport are priced slightly higher than standard flatbed shipments. Containers with hazardous residues requiring DOT-compliant transportation, placarding, and certified drivers carry an additional surcharge for compliance costs. Temperature-controlled transport for heat-sensitive applications is priced based on equipment availability.

Food-grade enclosed: +10-15% | Hazmat: +20-30% | Temperature-controlled: Custom quote

Customer Feedback

What Shippers Say About Us

We ship 4-6 truckloads of IBC totes per month between our three manufacturing plants. IBC Recycle Services handles all of it with their own fleet and carrier partners. On-time delivery rate has been 98% over the past year. Their route optimization means we are spending 20% less on freight than we did with our previous carrier.

Richard Bowman

Supply Chain Director

Midwest Chemical Corp., Chicago, IL

We needed 24 food-grade IBC totes delivered to our brewery in Nashville with only 3 days notice. IBC Recycle Services had a truck at our door in 48 hours, containers arrived in perfect condition, and the driver was professional and careful with unloading. They have been our go-to ever since.

Jennifer Walsh

Head Brewer

Cumberland Brewing Company, Nashville, TN

The real-time GPS tracking they provide is excellent. I can see exactly where our shipment is at any time. For a small business like ours that depends on just-in-time container delivery, that visibility is critical. No more wondering when the truck will show up.

Carlos Rivera

Owner

Rivera Ag Solutions, Owensboro, KY

We had been using a general freight broker for IBC transport and kept having damage issues. Totes were arriving with bent cages and cracked bottles from improper loading. Since switching to IBC Recycle Services, zero damage. Their drivers actually know how to handle IBC containers properly because that is all they do.

Patricia Nguyen

Warehouse Manager

Green Valley Foods, Atlanta, GA

Their backhaul pricing saved us a fortune. Since they already have trucks picking up empty totes from our area, they offered us a significantly discounted rate for delivering clean containers on the return trip. We are paying 35% less than the next best quote we received.

Steven Clarke

Procurement Manager

American Soap & Chemical, Detroit, MI

We run a disaster relief organization and needed 100 water storage totes delivered to three different staging sites across Kentucky and Tennessee in under 48 hours. IBC Recycle Services mobilized three trucks and had everything in place on time. Their flexibility and speed under pressure were remarkable.

Route Optimization

Our AI-powered route planning software analyzes every shipment to find the most fuel-efficient route, consolidate nearby pickups and deliveries, and eliminate unnecessary miles. This technology has reduced our total miles driven by 22% since implementation, saving approximately 45,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year and avoiding 460 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Fleet Modernization

We are actively transitioning our local fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, which produce 20% fewer CO2 emissions than diesel equivalents. Our long-haul tractor fleet meets EPA SmartWay emissions standards. All vehicles are equipped with automatic idle-shutdown systems and low-rolling-resistance tires to maximize fuel efficiency. Our target is a fully carbon-neutral transportation operation by 2027.

Carbon Offset Program

For emissions we cannot yet eliminate through efficiency and technology, we purchase verified carbon offsets through certified programs. Every shipment we make includes carbon offset coverage at no additional charge to our customers. Each delivery confirmation includes the associated carbon offset documentation, which clients can use in their own sustainability reporting.

Myth vs. Fact

IBC Transportation Misconceptions

Myth

Any freight carrier can handle IBC totes just as well as a specialist.

Fact

General freight carriers frequently cause damage to IBC totes because their drivers are not trained in proper loading and securing techniques. IBC totes require specific strapping patterns, edge protectors, and double-stacking procedures that general carriers often skip. Our 99.7% damage-free delivery rate vs. the industry average of 94% for general carriers speaks for itself.

Myth

LTL shipping is always cheaper than FTL for small quantities.

Fact

LTL is cheaper per-unit for very small orders (1-10 totes), but the break-even point is lower than most people think. At 24-28 totes, a dedicated FTL truck becomes more economical than LTL. Additionally, FTL shipments have faster transit times, no intermediate handling, and zero risk of damage from consolidation with incompatible freight.

Myth

It is not worth shipping empty IBC totes because the freight cost exceeds their value.

Fact

Empty IBC totes are lightweight (approximately 130-145 lbs each) and stack efficiently, making them cost-effective to ship even over long distances. A full truckload of 56 empty totes ships at a lower freight class than most industrial goods. The container value ($40-$180 per tote) typically far exceeds the per-unit shipping cost ($3-$10 per tote on FTL).

Myth

Shipping IBC totes with chemical residues requires expensive hazmat transport.

Fact

Most IBC totes with residual chemicals are classified as empty containers under DOT regulations and do not require full hazmat transport. Only containers with significant quantities of hazardous residues trigger hazmat requirements. Our team assesses each shipment and determines the appropriate classification to avoid unnecessary costs while maintaining full regulatory compliance.

Myth

Flatbed transport exposes IBC totes to weather damage.

Fact

IBC totes are designed for outdoor storage and are highly weather-resistant. HDPE bottles are UV-stabilized and waterproof, and galvanized steel cages resist corrosion. Flatbed transport is the standard method for empty and industrial-grade totes. For food-grade containers requiring enclosed transport, we use dedicated box trucks at a modest premium.

Myth

Scheduling a freight pickup takes days and requires complicated paperwork.

Fact

We provide quotes within hours and can schedule most pickups within 1-3 business days. There is no complicated paperwork. Provide the pickup address, delivery address, and quantity, and we handle everything else including routing, driver assignment, and documentation. For recurring shipments, booking is fully automated.

FAQ

Transportation FAQ

How many IBC totes fit on a standard truck?

A standard 53-foot flatbed trailer can carry 48-56 IBC totes in double-stacked configuration (24-28 on the bottom, 24-28 on top). A 26-foot box truck fits 18-24 totes in a single layer. Pickup trucks with trailers handle 1-4 totes. The exact count depends on tote dimensions (275 vs. 330 gallon), whether they are stacked, and any weight restrictions. Our logistics team calculates the optimal configuration for every shipment.

Do you offer insurance on shipments?

Yes. All shipments on our fleet are covered by our commercial cargo insurance policy up to $100,000 per load. For shipments through our carrier partners, standard carrier liability applies (typically $0.50-$2.00 per pound). Additional full-value insurance is available upon request for high-value loads. In the rare event of in-transit damage, we process claims quickly and either replace damaged containers or issue a credit within 10 business days.

Can you pick up from locations without a loading dock?

Absolutely. Many of our pickups are from open yards, farm fields, parking lots, and other locations without dock facilities. Our box trucks and flatbeds can be loaded from ground level using liftgates, ramps, or forklifts. For locations with forklift access, our drivers coordinate with your equipment operators. For locations without any equipment, our liftgate service can handle individual totes at ground level. Let us know your site conditions when requesting a quote so we can send the right equipment.

What are your cancellation and rescheduling policies?

Pickups and deliveries can be rescheduled at no charge with at least 24 hours notice. Cancellations with more than 48 hours notice incur no fees. Cancellations with less than 48 hours notice may incur a dry-run fee of $100-$250 depending on the truck type and distance already traveled. We understand that business schedules change and we work to accommodate last-minute adjustments whenever possible.

Do you transport IBC totes that are full of liquid?

Yes, we transport both empty and full IBC totes. Full 275-gallon totes weigh approximately 2,400 lbs and full 330-gallon totes weigh approximately 2,900 lbs, so load counts are reduced for full containers due to weight limits. A standard flatbed can carry 18-20 full totes vs. 48-56 empty totes. Full containers require additional securing and weight distribution consideration. Let us know whether your totes are full or empty when requesting a quote for accurate pricing.

How do I get a freight quote?

Contact us by phone, email, or through the quote request form on our website. Provide the pickup zip code, delivery zip code, number of totes, whether they are empty or full, and any special requirements (food-grade, hazmat, expedited). We will return a quote within a few hours for standard shipments. No obligation, no commitment — quotes are always free. For recurring transportation needs, we can set up a standing rate agreement that locks in favorable pricing.
